No longer under construction – global release Late Summer 2016 ‘How this e-Book was Made & How you can Make your Own’.

Below is a sample from the  ‘book within a book concept’. It shows step-by-step how this e-book was made from cover to virtual cover. inside and out. After reading it and following the steps using simple tools that most of us already have and use as writers, you will be able to publish your own e-book for FREE on all the global channels and watch your book fly off the virtual bookshelves.

I have included a TOC (Table of Contents) at the end of the sample to give you an idea of how the book is structured and what topics are dealt with:

Chapter One

By following the method used throughout this book, anyone wanting to publish the least technical, simplest and most affordable way might find great value in this method. All you need is to follow the simple seven steps using W= Word-type document way (I am specifically using the 2007 version), where you do your layout and formatting of interior (inside of main book).

If you have another version of ‘Word’ you can still follow along as the principle of formatting and layout is the same. If you are using Open Office – Writer, the same applies: the principles are the same. Even if you are not fully decided about self-publishing (but after reading this and following the simple guides you might), you will become an expert in working with any word-type program. By following this one section of the ‘Word’ or its equivalent ‘W’ way – you need go no further. You will know how to publish an e-book. However, if you want to know a little more beyond the text and basic images side of publishing, you could continue with the method provided here and follow the extended EPPU method outlined below. Although, you don’t need to go any further than the W=’Word’-type method to achieve publication, but come along and see how creative and independent you can actually be.

For instance, if we combine the ‘W’ method with ‘E’ which stands for E-pubs, and allows for the creation of fully digitalized e-book to be read on almost any e-reading device by directly using your document created employing the ‘W’ method and combining this with the ‘P’ part of the method which stands for PDF method (portable digital format) which allows you to make complete picture e-books, and by following the other ‘P’ type method – representing PowerPoint or its equivalent in Open Office – (this is not just a slide show and is great for creating covers and other graphic elements) and finally, ‘U’ = Uploading. Everything you need to know to upload your book and sell it globally, then we have the complete W.E.P.P.U way of self-publishing creatively, independently, with relatively little skill and using basic software that most of us use for other things. In other words, we can do it essentially for FREE. This method is also the headache FREE way.

By following some or all of the steps presented in this e-book, you can apply the same methods and principles to creating your own e-book. E-books are actually much trickier than physical books to produce professionally (but as I said before – you don’t need to worry about any of that), so once you have learned these steps – the painless and FREE way, you will be able to apply them directly to produce not only your e-book version of your book, but much of this information will help you produce the physical version as well. In fact, by the time you have finished your e-book using the following steps, you will already know enough about formatting your text – where you can do a more WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get), that you will be able to do this easily using the tools on Createspace (Amazon’s physical book creation platform) and you will even have a cover design of the correct quality to use as your cover for the physical version of your book and want to publish more e-books as you will know how to.

Chapter Two

Before spending loads of time making your manuscript look beautiful in ‘Word’ or its equivalent, please read the following first. Otherwise, your digital book will not reflect all your efforts. The biggest mistake most of us make when we first try to make an e-book using a ‘Word-type’ program is that somehow the formatting and layout (the look of the whole document with its fonts, and headers/sub-headings and lists etc) will be reflected in the e-book – it will not. Therefore, the steps below will show you how to work with a word processing document so that it can be translated into a digital e-book without all the usual hitches encountered by almost NEWBIE publishers trying to fathom this digital medium.

Note: In the end, you will be able to upload your document fully prepared for digital e-book translation to all the major outlets ranging from Kindle (KDP – Amazon’s Kindle Direct Publishing platform) to the Apple i-store and Barnes & Noble (Nook reader) and many more for global distribution. In order to achieve this, there are very specific methods to follow that will ensure success and it is pain-free. You should end up with a highly professional looking e-book by following this particular section of this guide.

Probably the greatest concept to your head around as a NEWBIE E-book publisher is the way that text, formatting and layout flows, resizes and generally morphs, depending upon the size and type of the e-reading device being used to read your e-book. For instance, the words you are reading now may be laid out somewhat similarly to how I created them in my ‘Word 2007’ document if you are reading this book on your computer monitor – even if it was downloaded via Kindle and it is running on Kindle for PCs, however, if you are reading it on a smart phone (e.g. Apple i-phone), all the words would flow to make reading comfortable and clear by aligning and scaling itself to be viewed on a significantly much smaller and elongated screen than the PC monitor. This is the main reason why most of us get the layout and formatting wrong when trying to upload it to be translated into an e-book.

There are many other nuances regarding the digital format to e-books which you will be able to overcome and not ever have to worry about, once you follow the steps below. In essence, e-books are just like webpages and work in much the same way. When you visit a site, you maybe don’t realize it, but, the page has resized itself according to the device you opened it up in. Because most of us do not use HTML (the coding instruction for the layout, formatting, placement and actions) to specify how this flowable and fluid page appears and can be interacted with by the user (you can click on things and they bring you to different webpages etc), the method given below will provide you with a fool-proof means of formatting and doing the layout of your e-book that will be functional, professional and user-friendly, and you can do it without having to ever know what HTML stands for, let alone having to use it. The one exception to this flowable text concept of the e-book is a more rigid and predictable format which I will mention here.

This is often referred to as FIXED FORMAT as it is a fixed type of e-books and typically not that different to a physical book in digital form. . I should note, however that the following steps working the word-processing document method would NOT BE SUITABLE to produce these fixed format types of books, but most of us don’t need to do them any way. But if you think your book might suit this format read on: For instance, FIXED format is more suitable for e-books requiring integrated images, graphics and text that need to relate to each other, such as a user-manual with diagrams. I will discuss further on if you are interested in such publishing a graphic-rich e-book. Amazon Kindle (KDP – Kindle Direct Publishing) has great tools to create these types of e-book (from Kid’s Kindle Generator to Text-book Generator).

However, if you want to spread your wings and go beyond Amazon, for the DIY method of creating graphic-rich e-books such as cookery books, children’s illustrated e-books and/or a user manual, there are methods to help you do this, requiring very little technical skill and/or needing to use expensive software which I have explored after this section. As I said above, most of us don’t need to worry about fixed format, although, that is not to say that we can’t use a certain degree of graphics and therefore, I have shown how to do simple placement of images within this section as you might need them occasionally.

Here’s How you do it….

Get rid of any previous formatting within your manuscript. Some call it the NUCLEAR method meaning to NUKE everything back to the text itself. This term and its meaning come from the style guide on Smashwords (the other major global platform for self-publishing e-books beyond Amazon KDP – Kindle Direct Publishing). Using this method means your MSS (manuscript) will have simple basic text – THE MANUSCRIPT striped down to its bare bones.

When you are ready to bring in your manuscript to your newly formatted blank document which will work on any e-reader device (this will be explained in Step Two), copy your entire manuscript by using the ‘select all’ tool, EITHER (a) paste this into your blank document using the ‘Special Paste’ tool in the main ‘Home’ menu and paste using the ‘unformatted text’ option, OR, (b) paste your selected manuscript text into a Notepad-type document (plain text document) – save this and it can be used later as by going into this type of document, your manuscript is already clear of previous formatting and ready to use in your blank formatted document ready for e-book viewing.

TIP 1: Make two copies at least of your manuscript: the original one backed up and the one that you are going to work from and copy across to your prepared document for your e-book. We will call this the ‘working manuscript’..

TIP 2: Note: if you have hyperlinks in your original text, these will not work once nuked – sorry! As someone who has learned the hard way and had more than 100 hyperlinks in my first e-book attempt, I would advise you to copy and paste the actual URL in every link (you can find this by going into edit hyperlink by right clicking mouse button and selecting that option) into your ‘working manuscript’ document and saving changes. That way the unformatted text will have the full URLs and these can be automatically hyperlinked after pressing return after it and/or be copied and made into a new hyperlink in your final formatted manuscript document ready to be uploaded as an e-book with fully clickable links. Now you know this, you will always do this method for your hyperlinks as it will save you a tremendous amount of time in the long run.

End of Text sample. Why not see the TOC (Table of Contents) below to see how the rest of the book is laid out and what it contains:
